Sydney does not have one application deadline that can be placed on a shared calendar. The University of Sydney uses Semester, UNSW uses Term, and UTS uses Session. The same word can therefore describe different parts of the admissions cycle.
For example, 1 December at the University of Sydney is the general Semester 1 closing date, while 30 August at UTS is the international closing date for Summer. These are not alternative names for the same intake. Before planning anything, identify four things: the university, the course, the exact intake and the applicant’s location or admission status.
University of Sydney: plan by Semester
The University of Sydney generally opens applications two years before the semester start date. Its standard coursework closing dates are:
| Semester | Standard start pattern | General application closing date |
|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | February | 1 December in the year before commencement |
| Semester 2 | August | 29 May in the commencing year |
The published 2026 standard start dates are 23 February 2026 for Semester 1 and 3 August 2026 for Semester 2. Use those dates to position your internal checklist, but do not assume every course begins on the standard date. Some courses follow different start dates, with most of the listed exceptions commencing earlier. The confirmed date appears in the offer letter.
The word “generally” matters. Individual course pages may provide different requirements or dates, and applications can close once capacity is reached. That means the published closing date is not permission to submit on the last day.
Two application routes need particular attention. Applicants for a Sciences Po Dual Degree or a diploma must apply directly to the University of Sydney, even if they are applying through UAC for other preferences. Additionally, honours applications have a separate schedule. Semester 1 applications open on 30 August in the year before commencement and close on 15 January. Semester 2 applications open on 31 January in the commencing year and close on 25 June.
Scholarships also have separate deadlines, and faculty application deadlines may vary. Do not treat the standard coursework closing date as the scholarship or faculty date.
Planning rule: Start with the individual course page, identify any direct-application or honours exception, then work backward from the course’s start date. Do not wait for the general date before confirming the route.
UNSW: identify the Term, then check capacity
UNSW does not publish one general international application closing date in the supplied admissions information. The correct planning sequence is to identify the relevant Term, check the international entry requirements, and monitor whether the programme has capacity.
The admissions page provides an Apply online route. It also has a status test: an applicant is an international student if they are not included in the listed domestic-status categories. Students currently undertaking certain specified qualifications are directed to a named undergraduate pathway, with the International Baccalaureate Diploma listed as an exception. Check the route attached to your qualification rather than assuming that every overseas applicant follows the same process.
Capacity is the immediate constraint in the current snapshot. As of 3 October 2026, UNSW stated that some programmes were at capacity for 2026 intakes and that new applications were closed to new Overseas Student Commencement (NOSC) places. It also stated that applications to all 2027 intakes were open. This is a dated capacity update, not a permanent rule about UNSW admissions.
The 2026 academic calendar shows when study occurs independently of the application process:
| Session | Teaching period | Examination period |
|---|---|---|
| Summer Term U1 | 5 January–6 February | 7–9 February |
| Term 1 | 16 February–24 April | 1–14 May |
| Term 2 | 1 June–7 August | 14–27 August |
| Term 3 | 14 September–20 November | 27 November–10 December |
These dates help you select a Term and align later planning, but they are not application closing dates.
Planning rule: If you are targeting a 2027 intake, confirm that the intake is open and that the programme has capacity before treating your application as safely placed. UNSW’s teaching calendar can tell you when classes begin; only the programme and admissions pages can establish the current application position.
UTS: separate the Session from the applicant’s location
UTS international closing dates follow a Session pattern rather than one institution-wide annual date. The table also separates applicants based outside Australia from those based in Australia:
| Session | Start pattern | Based outside Australia | Based in Australia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn | February/March | 30 November | 15 January |
| Spring | July | 30 April | 31 May |
| Summer | November | 30 August | Not listed in the international table |
These are standard dates for most courses. Some courses have different deadlines and may not be available in every Session, so the individual course page remains the controlling source. The international table does not attach a year to these dates; treat them as the published Session pattern, not as a fixed 2027 calendar.
Domestic students follow different arrangements. Domestic undergraduate applications go through UAC, and UAC sets the application dates. Domestic postgraduate applications have a separate table. For example, its Autumn 2027 window runs from 28 July 2026 to 31 January 2027; Autumn B for the School of Clinical and Health Sciences closes on 31 October 2026. The Master of Clinical Psychology, Master of Genetic Counselling, Master of Physiotherapy and Master of Speech Pathology each list 31 January 2027 as their closing date. The Spring 2027 domestic postgraduate window runs from 1 February to 27 June 2027.
The academic calendar is a separate matter. UTS lists 16 February 2026 as the start of Autumn classes and 27 July 2026 as the start of Spring classes. Autumn formal classes end on 15 May 2026, followed by final assessment from 25 May to 12 June 2026. Spring formal classes end on 23 October 2026.
Planning rule: Select the Session first, then use the international table only as the general deadline pattern. Check the course page before committing to a date.
What cannot wait — and what can
Several tasks should be completed before the application is submitted. First, you must confirm the exact course and intake, check the course page and note exceptions in the start date, availability and closing date. Second, establish the correct application route. This includes checking USyd direct applications and honours dates, UNSW’s status and qualification pathway, and UTS’s location-based columns. Third, prepare the required academic records. Ensure your grades and any required English-language test results are ready according to the course’s entry requirements. The published information does not provide one universal English-test deadline. Fourth, submit before the applicable closing date, and do not rely on reaching the final day. USyd warns that applications may close when capacity is reached, while UNSW’s dated update demonstrates programme-level closures. Fifth, plan visa and accommodation work backward from the Session. Start checking requirements and accommodation against the intended start date rather than leaving both until after submitting. No visa processing time is stated here, so do not calculate one from these pages. Finally, put tuition costs in the right year. USyd’s displayed international fees apply only to the year shown and change annually. UNSW reviews fees annually and states that tuition and related payments are due at the beginning of each term unless otherwise stated. UTS states that tuition fees vary by course and year and are paid in advance each Session.
Exploratory work can wait. Broad comparisons of courses or Sessions, general Sydney destination research, and preparation for an intake you are not targeting can follow the initial course-and-intake decision. Future teaching dates and payment milestones can also be placed in a post-submission tracker.
However, this does not include separate scholarship dates, faculty deadlines, course-specific requirements or capacity checks. When an offer letter arrives, immediately verify its start date; it may differ from the standard date.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one Sydney application deadline for all three universities?
No. USyd publishes Semester dates, UNSW uses Terms and has no single general international closing date in the supplied information, while UTS uses Session-based dates. Always include the university, course and intake with any deadline.
Can I use UTS’s 30 November, 30 April or 30 August as fixed dates for 2027?
They are the published international Session pattern, not year-specific dates printed in that table. Confirm the relevant course page and application cycle.
Does UNSW’s 2026 academic calendar tell me when applications close?
No. It gives teaching and examination dates. Application availability must be checked through UNSW’s admissions information.
Why does UTS show different dates for applicants in Australia and overseas?
UTS separates closing dates by whether the applicant is based outside Australia or in Australia. Use the column that matches the applicant’s current location, then check for course-specific exceptions.
What can safely wait?
Broad exploratory research can wait after the target course and intake are fixed. Required results, route decisions, course checks, capacity checks and submission cannot.
Start from the intake, not from a generic deadline
Create one planning row for every university and course you are considering. Record the exact intake, start date, application route, course-specific closing date and capacity status. Set the submission milestone before the final closing date, then work backward from the confirmed start date to plan visa checking, accommodation and the correct year’s tuition budget.
Your offer letter and the individual course page remain more important than any general calendar pattern.
